Ancient Sands of Time
Monument Valley, Arizona
Limited Edition of 250 | Artist Proof 25
Jutting into an ocean of open space from a sea of undulating sand dunes, this eastern corner of Monument Valley near the pillars of Yei Bi Chei and Totem Pole has been a mystical crossroads for the Navajo, Hopi and the Anasazi—Puebloan peoples revered as “the ancient ones”—before them. In Navajo, the name for the color red is Łichíí'. The hue is owed to siltstone laden with iron oxide, with mountains of rock eroded into sand grains. Here in the Southwest, sophisticated indigenous civilizations called these lands home millennia before the Egyptians built their pyramids and farming cultures rose in Mesopotamia halfway around the world.
