Morning Light - Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon, Arizona
Limited Edition of 250 | Artist Proof 25
The Colorado Plateau is a province of vast geological richness and wondrously surreal rock formations, shaped by pushing and pulling of tectonic plates, erosion, and runoff that has crazed labyrinths twisting through red slot canyons. Two of the most spectacular are the twins of Upper and Lower Antelope in northern Arizona. In English, Upper Antelope Canyon is called “the crack” but the Navajo know it as Tsé bighánílíní or “the place where water runs through rocks”; Lower Antelope Canyon has been given the nickname “the corkscrew” while the Navajo term referencing it is Hazdistazí for “spiral rock arches.” Living up to its glorious legend as a maze of awe and danger owed to flash floods, Lower Antelope’s sculptural masses and interplay of bending ambient light and shadows make these photographs read like abstract paintings. The water that gushes through these walls, draining the plateau, reaches the Colorado River only a short distance away and feeds white-capped rapids in the Grand Canyon.
